Dear Friends: Welcome to the latest issue of LiveWell, and thank you for taking time to learn how you can take steps to improve your health and wellness as well as that of a loved one. We hope these articles not only increase your awareness of health concerns, but also spur you to take action and consult your physician if necessary. Our feature story illustrates a CHRISTUS Santa Rosa patient who became aware of a serious potential medical issue — a BRCA1 gene mutation, which indicates a higher likelihood of getting breast cancer — and made some life-changing decisions as a result. We would like to thank Lisa for sharing her personal story of courage in the face of a difficult decision. After reading Lisa's story, you may have questions about your own potential risk of a breast cancer diagnosis. Learn about the importance of BRCA testing if you are at high risk, as well as steps you could take before undergoing this test. Also in this issue, we discuss our cardiovascular services and the benefits of having them available throughout the region for your convenience. At CHRISTUS Santa Rosa, we believe no one in our community should be denied heart care, which is why we have taken great strides to ensure our cardiovascular services are robust and available within a short driving distance for those who may need them. You can read about how we go beyond simply "fixing" hearts. Of course, not all steps toward health and wellness require a visit with a care provider. One of our chefs invites you into the kitchen for a healthy recipe how-to and offers ideas for healthier holidays. Discover ways you can garden your way to good health by taking advantage of South- Central Texas' longer growing season. Wishing you wellness, Patrick B.
