www.centrastate.com Holiday 2014 5 Thanks to the efforts of CentraState physicians such as Bhavesh Balar, MD, Harvey Silverman is a three- time cancer survivor who can now look forward to a healthy future. with my doctors, and between my wife and daughter, it was like I had live-in nurses. They took care of me every second of the day." Within a month after finishing his treatments, Harvey was feeling like his old self again. He continued working until his retirement in August 2013. A THIRD CHALLENGE Harvey's world changed once again when he woke up one morning in February 2014 and noticed blood in his urine. He immediately went to CentraState's Emergency Department. Tests showed problems in both of his kidneys—a kidney stone in the left side that was too large to pass and a mass in the right side that doctors believed to be cancer. This complex set of problems required two minimally invasive surgical procedures with Troy Sukkarieh, MD, and Doh Yoon Cha, MD, both board-certified urological surgeons on staff at CentraState. First, the team performed a procedure in which a tube is inserted into the kidney via a small incision in the back to remove the kidney stone. The stone is broken up into fragments and removed through the tube. After recovering for a couple of weeks, Harvey had a second surgery to remove his right kidney. The cancer hadn't spread beyond the kidney, so his "prognosis is excellent" that his kidney cancer was cured with the procedure, Dr. Sukkarieh says. "It was a very technical set of procedures because we had to make sure the kidney where we found the stone was in good health before we removed the cancerous kidney," Dr. Sukkarieh says. "We have a lot of experience doing these types of advanced procedures at CentraState, and his treatment went as well as we could have hoped." MOVING ON With his treatments behind him, Harvey will continue regular follow-up visits with his doctors, as well as regular imaging exams to monitor his progress. "He is doing amazingly well considering what he has gone through," Dr. Balar says. "As of now, he's survived lung cancer, a recurrence of lung cancer and kidney cancer, which is fairly remarkable." Now, Harvey is looking to return to part-time work and pursue volunteer opportunities in the community. Someday, he hopes to get back to hiking and mountain climbing. "I've lived in Freehold for 25 years and I've watched CentraState grow into a first-class hospital," he says. "The treatment I've gotten there is the best."
