Heng Wang, MD, PhD, was one of the youngest doctors in China when he graduated from medical school at the age of 20. Soon after, and in record time, he obtained an MS in Nutrition and a PhD in Biochemistry, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in Nutrition and Gastroenterology and (last but not least) a residency in pediatrics. How he ended up in the middle of Northeast Ohio Amish country — diagnosing, treating, researching and even naming rare genetic diseases — is a remarkable story, one that we're proud to publish as the Cover Story of this issue of MD News. In our Feature Story, we describe a new treatment option — an implantable electronic pacemaker-like upper airway stimulation system — for select patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Designed for the 20 percent of patients with OSA who cannot or will not use CPAP, the new system was FDA-approved in May. And University Hospitals is the first, and reportedly the only, medical center in Northeast Ohio to offer it. Cancer is the theme of our Special Clinical Section.
