COVER FEATURE Innovation in Cancer Care By Robert Janek and Alex Strauss Center — the region's first freestanding cancer hospital — opened its doors to patients. Named after lifelong philanthro- pists and UH supporters Jane and Lee Seidman, the new $260 million, 150-bed hospital is home to the most advanced technology, treatments and cancer experts available under one roof. "UH Seidman Cancer Center is one of ON only 12 freestanding cancer hospitals in the country that are part of a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center through our affiliation with the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine," says Nathan Levitan, MD, president of UH Seidman Cancer Center. "Each patient care floor is dedicated to certain types of cancer needs. So, for example, outpatient infusion services are conveniently located on the ground floor, radiation therapy is in the lower level, and all imaging and surgery is on the second floor." Since 80 percent of cancer care is ambulatory, outpatient clinical care is provided on the first floor where 39 exam rooms, two IV start rooms, four procedure rooms and seven consult rooms are located. Here, outpatient clinical care "corridors" accommodate multidisciplinary clinics for 10 subspecialty cancer areas, including gynecologic, leukemia/lymphoma, lung and genitourinary cancer. The third floor is dedicated to patients with hematologic malignancies. A bone marrow transplant laboratory and inpa-
