tient pharmacy are located here. So, too, is the Goodman Discovery Center for Clinical Research where 450-500 patients participate in clinical trials each year. "The Goodman Discovery Center is where many inpatients and outpatients enrolled in clinical trials are treated and monitored by specially trained clinicians," says Dr. Gerson. "UH is currently involved in more than 300 clinical trials — among the highest number in the nation — and is one of only 14 centers selected by NCI to bring new drugs to clinical trials. As a result, our patients gain earlier access to these potentially life-saving agents." Inpatient rooms are located on the fourth, fi fth and sixth fl oors which are dedicated respectively to medical oncology, surgical oncology and women's oncology. Each fl oor has 30 private rooms with full bathrooms, wireless Internet connections and work stations, and overnight accom- modations for family members. There are also activities rooms, laundry facilities and other conveniences on each of these fl oors for families. In addition, each patient room has a computer with access to UH's Electronic Medical Record system, so physicians can pull up a patient's password-protected plan of care to review with the patient and caregivers. In addition, interactive TV systems in patients' rooms enable patients to receive educational programming specifi c to their condition or to the tests or procedures they will be undergoing. "Our Patient and Family Advisory Council offered hundreds of suggestions, such as adding an equipped exercise studio on the blood and marrow transplant fl oor where a patient may have to stay for extended periods, and designing infusion stations so patients could have the option of receiving their chemotherapy in privacy or in a more social setting with other patients," adds Dr. Levitan, "and we incorporated most of their suggestions into UH Seidman Cancer Center." But in the end it's not about the building, he points out. It's about the care that's delivered there. And that's directly related to the innovative technology, model of care and multidisciplinary teams of physicians and high quality nurses.
