+++++++++++++++++++++++++++ + + +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ FROM THE PUBLISHER +++ +++ TT HE FIRST FREESTANDING cancer hospital in Northeast Ohio is now open. And we're proud to spotlight it in this special issue of MD News. Cleveland-Akron-Canton University Hospitals (UH) Seidman Cancer Center is a $260 million, 150-bed hospital — 1 of only 12 freestanding cancer hospitals in the country that are part of a National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center. Located in downtown Cleveland on the campus of UH Case Medical Center, the new cancer center is 10 stories high with 375,000 square feet — triple the square footage cancer services previously encompassed on this campus. The goal was to provide easier access to all cancer services under one roof, and UH has done just that. Each patient care fl oor is dedicated to certain types of cancer needs. So, for example, outpatient infusion services are conveniently located on the ground fl oor, radiation therapy is in the lower level, and all imaging and surgery is on the second fl oor. Also under one roof is a wealth of advanced technology — perhaps the most ever assembled in a cancer hospital. For diagnosis, there are state-of-the-art ultrasounds, CTs, PETs, PET/CTs, MRIs (including an intraoperative 3.0T MRI), and one of the world's fi rst PET/MRI machines. For treatment, two advanced linear accelerators complement the latest radiation oncology technologies including Synergy-S Hexapod, TomoTherapy, image guided radiation therapy (IGRT), intraoperative radiation therapy, and CyberKnife and Perfexion Gamma Knife radiosurgery, along with a da Vinci Robotic Surgical System and (coming soon) a proton radiotherapy system. But in the end it's not just about the building or the technology. It's about the innovative care that's delivered there. And that's directly related to the physicians (more than 240 of them) and clinical trials (more than 300 of them), along with a dedicated staff and unique model of care that is effi cient and effective. So read on and experience UH Seidman through our eyes. We were impressed. We think you will be, too. Thanks for reading!
