YOU R THOUG HTS CAN determine how you feel about
your body and how you live your life — for better or worse.
Fortunately, it's possible to change negative thoughts.
"A positive body image is crucial to happiness and
wellness," said Willo Wisotsky, PhD, licensed psychologist
with the North Shore-LIJ Center for Weight Management
at Syosset Hospital. "Practicing good self-care and
kindness may be a major shift, but over time these
practices can send your internal critic packing."
Use these tips to stay positive:
• Be your own best friend. Would you talk about a
loved one's body the way you talk about your own?
Treat yourself like a good friend you want to support
and love.
• Put an end to negative self-talk. Whenever you
catch yourself thinking self-critical thoughts, stop
immediately and replace them with kind,
caring thoughts.
• Adopt a routine of balanced eating and daily exercise
that fosters health and fi tness.
• Live in the present. Appreciate your body for
the many ways it works rather than its outward
appearance.
"Developing a healthy body image can take time,
especially if you have been struggling for years,"
Dr. Wisotsky said. "By taking deliberate steps to stop the
negative self-talk, it's possible to be content, and even
happy, with the way you look at any size."

Eating intuitively requires listening to your body's
natural signals of hunger and distinguishing
between physical and emotional cravings. Learn
to trust your body's cues to help lose weight and
keep it off.
