BRIEFS CentraState CENTRASTATE'S 40TH ANNIVERSARY EVENT A SUCCESS CentraState Medical Center celebrated its 40th anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 25, with an event in the Star and Barry Tobias Ambulatory Campus. Representatives from various CentraState departments lined the hallway of the campus to offer information and free screenings to attendees. Activities for children were also available, including face painting, puppet shows, and visit from Healthy Hannah, the CentraState bike bot. The highlight of the day was a presentation about living a healthy lifestyle by Jay and Jen Jacobs, former contestants on TV's "The Biggest Loser." CENTRASTATE INTRODUCES NEW ROBOTIC KIDNEY SURGERY CentraState Medical Center now offers a safer, more comfortable form of kidney surgery known as computer-assisted robotic renal surgery, or robotic nephrectomy. Nephrectomy involves removing all or part of the kidney. Surgeons sit at the control panel of a da Vinci® surgical robot and make small incisions in the patient's abdomen. Doctors use the machine's high definition optical system, combined with a laparoscopic ultrasound device, to view the inside and outside of the kidney, simultaneously. Potential benefits of robotic kidney surgery include shorter recovery time and less pain, scarring, and risk of infection. CENTRASTATE MEDICAL CENTER RECOGNIZED FOR CANCER CARE The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) has granted three-year reaccreditation with commendation through 2014 to the Cancer Program at CentraState. Accreditation by the CoC is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to providing the highest level of quality cancer care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance. CENTRASTATE PLEDGES TO IMAGE WISELY CentraState Medical Center is now a leader in the national initiative to Image Wisely™ . Sponsored by the American College of Radiology and others, this program seeks to raise awareness of opportunities to eliminate unnecessary imaging and to lower radiation in necessary imaging examinations. CentraState took the Image Wisely pledge and agreed to put patient safety, health, and welfare first by optimizing imaging examinations to use only the radiation necessary to produce diagnostic-quality images. As an American College of Radiology-accredited facility, CentraState routinely reviews imaging protocols that provide minimal exposure and uses the lowest dose while still maintaining superior-quality images.
