RECENT RESEARCH Akron Children's Hospital Enrolling Patients in Trial for STX209 Akron Children's Hospital is 1 of 20 clinical sites in the US involved in a phase three study of a potential new drug, STX209, for the treatment of social impairment in adolescents and adults ages 12 to 25 with fragile X syndrome. Patients are now being enrolled. Akron Children's is also enrolling children ages 5 to 11 with fragile X syndrome in a second study of STX209. Fragile X syndrome is a neurodevel- opmental disorder characterized by impaired social function, cognition and speech, as well as attention defi cits and low functional independence. It is the most common inherited form of intel- lectual disability and the most common known cause of autism. The drug being studied is an oral selec- tive gamma-amino butyric acid type B (GABA-B) receptor agonist developed by Seaside Therapeutics, Inc., of Cambridge, Mass., the trial sponsor. The studies fol- low recently-released results from a phase two study of STX209, which showed clinically meaningful improvements on global and specifi c neurobehavioral outcomes in the general study population. The study is designed to measure the efficacy, safety and tolerability of STX209, and evaluate social withdrawal. Stents have been used to prevent re-narrowing of coronary arteries after balloon angioplasty and newer designs have included coatings with medications to prevent re-narrowing from occurring within the stent after implantation. The recent study, which was published in the American Heart Journal. suggests that these medicated stents may deliver the medication to the vessel beyond the stent. If this concept is confirmed it could revolutionize treatment of cardiovascular disease and problems with other organ systems as well. Stents could be altered to deliver many different medications in small amounts directly to the blood vessels. This could maximize the benefi ts of differ- ent drugs and reduce their toxic effects. n
