RECENT STUDY GIVES HOPE TO PATIENTS SUFFERING FROM DEPRESSION Nearly 50 percent of patients with major depression do not respond to traditional antidepressants that are currently on the market. Wichita researchers Sheldon Preskorn, MD, and Matthew Macaluso, DO, both psychiatry professors at the KU School of Medicine-Wichita, are principal investigators in a national study for a new drug that could give these patients an effective treatment. The study found that half of the patients who had not benefited from treatment with existing antidepressants did improve follow - ing treatment with a new drug, GlYX-13. These results were re- cently presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology. Ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic otherwise known as Special K, has recently raised hope for those suffering from treatment-resistant depression. While both ketamine and GlYX-13 work on the chemi - cal messenger in the brain, they do so in different ways, allowing GlYX-13 to provide the same antidepressant effects without causing dissociation. There are still more studies to be done, but based on results, the drug could be approved and on the market within a few years.
