HUNGER READS THE MORNING PAPER , TOO. A BELGIAN STUDY SHOWS PHYSICIANS CONSIDER FAR MORE THAN DOLLAR SIGNS IN THEIR SEARCH FOR THE RIGHT JOB. B elgium, like the United States, faces a growing physician shortage and increased competition in the hospital employee market. For organizations looking to hire, the question is: What draws physicians to certain hospitals and not others? According to the study, released in 2014 by BMC Health Services Research, the answer lies less in salary figures and more in the qualities of the hospital itself. Only 7.4 percent of physician respondents reported that pay and other financial benefits significantly contributed to an employer's overall attractiveness in the job market. More important to physi- cians were professional development opportunities (18.8 percent), organizational support (17.2 percent), hospital prestige (16.5 percent) and leader support (9.3 percent). Overall, it was a hospital's profes- sional and relational attributes, not the economic benefits of the job, that mattered most to physicians. What can U.S. hospitals glean from these findings? Healthcare leaders should be aware of the complex set of motives driving the job-seeking behaviors of today's physicians. Hospital recruiters may do well to paint a more robust picture of the organizational environ- ment, emphasizing physician relations and work culture alongside financial perks. This may be especially relevant for university hospitals, from which the study's participants were selected. ■ Less Tangible Factors Figure Big in Recruitment By Colin Stayton 2 6 | MD NEWS ■ M D N E W S .
