Sound Shore Health System (SSHS) is pleased to announce the launch of its electronic medi- cal records (EMR) system. Working closely with the premier leader in health care information technology, SSHS departmental teams assessed needs and provided input that was invaluable in develop- ing the appropriate technology for a successful rollout. While SSHS' primary focus was to establish a leading-edge EMR system, it expanded the project to incorporate new systems for admit- ting, laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, nursing, patient billing and accounting — all with a focus toward safety and security for health care information. With the activation of this multimillion dollar project at Sound Shore Medical Center, Mount Vernon Hospital and Schaffer Extended Care Center, SSHS has established a state-of-the-art system — one that will improve the quality, ef- fi ciency and safety of medical records, while providing portability of information for its patients. The redesign includes adult and pediatric triage rooms, two asthma treatment rooms and two exam rooms per provider. The newly expanded space has been reconfi gured to decrease waiting time with one-stop services such as fi nancial counseling, nutrition and social work, integrating a patient-centered medical home model of care. The center, located at 1225 Gerard Avenue in the Bronx, delivers a multidisciplinary team ap- proach that focuses on the community's health and its psychological and social needs. A team of board-certifi ed physicians, nurses, social workers and administrative staff treat and coor- dinate primary and specialty care for the whole family — from infants to geriatric patients. The Center for Sleep Medicine at Hudson Val- ley Hospital Center is opening its doors this fall, providing state-of-the-art diagnostic tools to help people with sleep disorders. During a sleep study at the center, noninva- sive sensors are placed on the patient to record everything from brain activity to breathing to muscle movement. A board-certifi ed sleep technician oversees the sleep study to pinpoint any underlying problems, which can include: + obstructive sleep apnea — interruptions in sleep caused by shallow breathing or periods of not breathing that may last for 10 seconds or more + parasomnia — wakeful body functions during sleep, such as sleepwalking or teeth grinding. "The Center for Sleep Medicine follows guidelines established by the American Acade- my of Sleep Medicine to deliver prompt results in a warm, friendly environment," says Debbie Neuendorf, Vice President, Administration. "By raising the bar on both comfort and quality, our sleep center aims to exceed our community's expectations." n ADVERTISERS' INDEX First Consult............................................... 29 Good Samaritan Hospital .....................
