West Virginia ELCOME TO THE latest issue of MD News West Virginia, the industry magazine about, from and for physicians. In this issue, we focus on WVU Healthcare Bariatrics' comprehensive program geared to address the state's high rate of morbid obesity — one of the highest rates in the United States. In addition to bariatric surgeons who offer a full spec- trum of corrective surgical options, the WVU Healthcare Bariatrics team includes dieticians, psychologists, a patient coordinator and a physician assistant. The team interacts with patients and oversees their progress. Cardiologists, pulmonologists and internal medicine physicians may also be called upon for their expertise. It is difficult to overstate the importance of bariatric surgery in addressing the obesity epidemic and associated comorbidities. A very interesting article features WVU Healthcare's Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Division, which offers a range of elective and corrective procedures from rhinoplasty and facelifts to complex recon- structions following cancer treatment, previous operations, trauma or congenital conditions. Specialty areas include post-mastectomy breast reconstruction, microsurgery and pediatric plastic surgery to correct craniofacial deformities. In our special clinical section, we examine the effectiveness of bariatric procedures relative to traditional means of weight loss. Additionally, we report on the potential of a cocktail of FDA-approved drugs to treat diabetes. Our Data Vault offers a statistical snapshot of bariatric surgery and obesity. MD News is an effective platform for medical professionals to share their expertise with healthcare providers throughout the region. Contact me at 717-575-6691 or secenbarger@mdnews.com to discuss articles for future issues.
