Throughout the first week of February, students from Pine Bush High School's Excelsior Medical Academy shadowed Crystal Run Healthcare physicians, helping students gain a greater knowledge of a career in the medical field. The yearlong program fo - cuses predominantly on shadowing and field observation and is made up of 10 high school seniors who are in the top 10 percent of their class and who demonstrate a significant desire to enter the healthcare field. These 10 individuals had the opportunity to shadow 11 Crystal Run Healthcare physi - cians in primary care, cardiology, gastro- enterology and pulmonary medicine. The shadow program is the field study portion of the curriculum and allows students to learn through observing actual physicians in their day-to-day activities. (L–R) Crystal Run Healthcare pulmonologist Ali Hmidi, MD, with PBHS Medical Academy student Bria Austin and Evelin Ponce, LPN, demonstrates the proper use of CPAP therapy for patients with sleep apnea. Vassar Brothers Medical Center has received the 2015 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence according to Healthgrades, an online resource for comprehensive infor - mation about physicians and hospitals. The NEWS distinction places Vassar Brothers Medical Center in the top 5 percent of the more than 4,500 hospitals evaluated nationwide based solely on its outstanding clinical performance. This is the fifth straight year Vassar Brothers has received this honor. The 261 recipients of the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence stand out among the rest for overall clinical excel - lence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2015 study period, including 2011 through 2013, these hospitals showed superior perfor- mance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 of the most common inpatient conditions and procedures, as measured by objective clinical outcomes performance data, i.e., risk-adjust - ed mortality and in-hospital complications. Orange Regional Medical Center's Trauma and Injury Prevention Program recently hosted a Car Seat Misuses demonstration to promote car seat safety. Hospital staff and visitors who wished to participate were asked to spot the misuses displayed in two car seat demonstrations set up incorrectly, in comparison to one car seat demonstra - tion set up the correct way. Participants who were able to identify the misuses were given prizes. Orange Regional car seat safety technicians, Town of Wallkill Ambulance Corp. and Orange County Traffic Safety Program were available to explain common car seat misuses such as loose harness straps, loose seats, incorrect use of lower anchors and use of nonregulated (aftermarket) products. Car seat safety technicians also provided education on the proper installation and use of car safety seats. Orange Regional Medical Center is a Car Seat Fit Station offering certified technicians who install and teach parents and community members how to properly install child car seats to ensure maximum protection. To find out when the next Fit Station date is, call 845-333-1379. For more information on the Trauma and Injury Prevention Program, visit ormc.org/InjuryPrevention.
