T HE SPECIALTY OF female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery encompasses care for a wide ra nge of conditions, including bladder prolapse (cystocele), rectal prolapse (rectocele), small intes- tine prolapse (enterocele) and vaginal prolapse. Female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery specialists also treat stress and urge incontinence, which can occur independently of or in conjunction with bladder or vaginal prolapse. According to Dr. Press — one of only two urologists in Suffolk County board-certified in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery — the most common conditions he treats include bladder prolapse, stress urinary incontinence, and a combination of stress and urge incontinence. These disorders can greatly impact a patient's ability to perform daily activities. "Patients who have prolapse typically experience constant, uncomfortable vaginal pressure that keeps them from per for ming act iv it ies t hey enjoy," Dr. Press says. "Urine leakage or dis- comfort prevents them from staying active, which makes them feel much older than their chronological age." Repairing the Pelvic Floor Pelvic f loor disorders occur when the fascia and ligaments supporting the vagina and other pelvic organs weaken or tear. Cystoceles are typically caused by damage to the pubocervical fascia, while rectoceles result from a defect in the rectovaginal fascia. Women with stress incontinence typi- cally have pubocervical fascia that is too weak to support the urethra. As a LED BY BOARD-CERTIFIED UROLOGIST SCOTT M.
