H ANS LUDERS, MD, PhD, a neu- rologist and epilepsy specialist with the University Hospitals (UH) Neurological Institute and Professor of Neurology with Case Western Reser ve University School of Medicine, received the prestigious William G. Lennox Award at the recent annual meeting of the American Epilepsy Society. The award recognizes a lifetime record of contributions and accomplish- ments in epilepsy research and treatment. Internationally known for his work in epilepsy, Dr. Luders developed a new way of localizing the source of epileptic seizures based on each seizure's specific outward signs, such as a patient seeing flashing lights or hearing a buzz before the seizures begin. He also mapped several cognitive centers in the brain by documenting patients' responses to electrical stimulation. Determining the precise location in the brain responsible for epileptic seizures is essential for planning and conducting successful epilepsy surgery. In addition, Dr. Luders was one of the UH physicians responsible for bringing an innovative surgical technique for epilepsy to UH from Japan, where it was developed. Using the technique, called multiple hippocampal transection, UH neurosurgeons make five or six shallow slices in the patient's hippocampus, a region of the brain. These shallow cuts do not remove the brain tissue causing the patient's seizures, but they make it no longer capable of producing seizures. UH is the only medical center in the United States offering this technique. Dr. Luders is the author of more t ha n 300 peer-rev iewed scientif ic papers, ha s ed ited more t ha n 20 book s a nd is a member of severa l professiona l societies. He is board certified in Electroencephalography, N e u r o p h y s i o l o g y , P s y c h i a t r y and Neurology. ■ BY AMERICAN EPILEPSY SOCIET Y Dr. Hans Luders Honored 2 0 1 5 M AY/J U N E ■ M D N E W S .
