All of these reasons and more can lead to severe bouts of depression, suicidal preoccupation and sudden and unexplained changes in behavior in older patients. Southwest General's 18-bed Geriatric Behavioral Health Unit provides short-term inpatient care for older adults suffering from acute psychiatric and behavioral symptoms and crises. Interdisciplinary teams of psychiatrists, nurses, and therapists work with the patients and their families to evaluate and treat the behaviors.
