People in the NEWS Candace Schiffer, RN, AOCNP, a nurse practi- tioner at the North Shore-LIJ Cancer Institute in Lake Success, was recently honored by the Long Island/Queens Chapter of the Oncology Nursing Society for her efforts at mentoring oncology nurses and educating patients. Schiffer, a hematology/oncology nurse, received the Kay O'Brien Memorial Award for encouraging oncology nurses as they pursue additional certifications. Having earned advanced oncology nurse practitioner certification, Schiffer encourages others to pursue similar qualifications. Her philosophy is that nurses should understand the questions asked on these certification exams rather than focusing solely on getting the right answer. The Kay O'Brien Memorial Award is named after late Long Island/Queens Oncology Nursing Society Chapter member Catherine (Kay) O'Brien, AOCN, and was presented March 11 at the Stewart Manor Country Club. The free educational event provided attendees infor - mation about current medical management, new treatment strategies and deep brain stimulation. The CDC rated complications from Parkinson's disease as the 14th leading cause of death in the United States. Worldwide, it is estimated that as many as 10 million people suffer from the condition. There is hope, however, as scientists work towards a cure and make progress in identifying the best treatment options for patients. St. Catherine's American Parkinson Disease Association Information and Referral Service is available to offer support and is staffed by a part-time nurse coordinator and a medical director who is a board-certified neurologist.
