Summer is a great time of year to slow down and take a few minutes to relax, recharge and reflect on the first half of the year. Recently, we spent some time at Duke Raleigh Hospital reflecting on our mission and vision for the future, and we realized that although our commitment to providing extraordinary care hasn't changed, we want to do more to improve the lives of our patients and community. Our new mission is to improve health, advance knowledge and inspire hope. We want to give you the tools and information you need to stay healthy and prevent disease before it takes a toll on your life—and provide the support and resources you may need if you or a loved one develops a chronic illness. Beyond that, Duke Raleigh strives to be this community's most trusted healthcare resource, providing you with outstanding quality, an unparalleled patient experience and innovative care delivery. We're working with sta„ throughout the hospital to implement our new mission and vision. You can be a part of our e„orts as well. Kevin Shah, MD Meet the Physician: Dr. Kevin Shah Kevin Shah, MD, joined Duke Cancer Center Raleigh aer completing two fellowships at Duke Raleigh Hospital last year. Dr. Shah, surgical oncologist and assistant professor of surgery at Duke Raleigh, graduated from Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia. After completing his general surgery residency at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Shah came to Duke Raleigh for fellowships in surgical oncology and hepatobiliary surgery, which addresses diseases of the liver and pancreas. Dr. Shah has a particular interest in minimally invasive procedures, which he uses to help patients with complex gastrointestinal issues seeking treatment through Duke Raleigh's Advanced Digestive Care program. "Operations we used to think of as highly complicated have become much less so, thanks to new technology and minimally invasive surgeries," Dr. Shah says. "Significant advancements have been made recently in terms of both what we do in the operating room and how we take care of patients afterward." Regardless of whether his patients have a cancerous or noncancerous condition, he helps them weigh their options and decide on the best course of treatment. "The diseases I deal with are challenging and emotionally charged," he says. "While it is di˜cult sometimes to navigate these situations, it is very satisfying helping patients and their families."
