I have fallen in love with this house located at 76 Beacon Street in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Everyone loves water, but to be able to hear a stream running under your home every minute of the day is awesome! This historic structure was built sometime between 1917 and 1919 by Nelson Aldrich's father, a famous Boston architect who resided in Brookline, to be his summer residence. Later, the home belonged to Dr. Sweetland. The garage was built by Harry Strong, a local mason. It consisted of 10-inch cut stone and had five oak garage doors. The walls and ceilings were plastered. At the rear of the garage were three rooms. In the center of the garage was an old-fashioned gasoline pump and tank for servicing cars. There were water spigots for washing the cars, and electricity was available. The chau"eur and his wife lived in rooms at the rear of the garage. The garage was converted to a home in 1970. After years of patience, and with the help of Realtor Jeana Kahn, Gary Canner and his wife purchased the home. I know you will enjoy the story. Also in this issue, we feature builder Jim Gaddis, who worked on the house and the Sea Level Oyster Bar. I go back many years with Jim. A very special thanks to Suzanne Naudin for all her help and for doing the graphic design on the ads. You are very talented. It was so nice to see Richard Trethewey and meet his sons, Evan and Ross. Richard and I go back many years. I love "This Old House" and watch it often. It's the one program through which you can learn many educational things about the building trade. Enjoy this issue! Be Mr Until next month, Betty Moore, Publisher | Greater Boston Builder+Architect BOSTON.BUILDERARCHITECT.COM
