HIS YEAR'S NATIONAL Association
of Home Builders' Best in American
Living Awards recognized innovative
and in-demand designs. On a list also
featuring indoor/outdoor designs and white-
on-white kitchens, these stand out:
… Centered bathtubs create a spa-like feel
and highlight well-designed tubs. Not all
tubs are created equal, and in this design,
porcelain artistry is critical.
… Natural and contemporary fusion
combines an almost woodland feel with
contemporary materials that often skew
to the industrial. Perhaps it's the result
of city-dwellers seeking a return to their
rustic roots, but wood, steel and glass can
be used in any aspect of home design to
create a soft but striking appearance.
… Getaway rooms are the new game
or bonus rooms. While many include
billiard tables and the like, designers
are beginning to incorporate unique
spaces, such as stages, that reflect the
homeowner's lifestyle.
… Details, details, details can be the
most overlooked and most scrutinized
aspect of a home. Opportunities knock
for designers, particularly when fusing
natural elements with contemporary
style, to join wood, glass and steel with
connections that pop.
… Double islands provide ample spaces to
prepare food and dine — all in the same
room. A second island provides a versatile
space that can be treated as a formal
dining room or casual eating area.
