+++++++++++++++++++++++++++ + + +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ FROM THE PUBLISHER +++ +++ W W Jan Raabe P U B L I SHE R ELCOME TO THE March-April issue of MD News, where you'll find stories and articles about, from and for physicians in the greater Cleveland/Akron/Canton area. Our cover story spotlights Jaikirshan J. Khatri, MD, an innovative inter- ventional cardiologist. Born in Pakistan, Dr. Khatri has lived in Ohio all but eight years of his life. Five of those were spent in Georgia at Emory University completing fellowships in cardiology and interventional cardiology. In 2006, he joined the medical staff of Southwest General, where he's introduced some new procedures, including a radial approach to coronary chronic total occlusion and repair of atrial septal defects percutaneously. In another story, we visit University Hospitals Transplant Institute. Since 1968, when the first organ transplant took place at UH, more than 3,300 solid organ transplants for adults and children have been performed there. Speaking of children, our second feature story focuses on Akron Children's Hospital and its Maternal/Fetal Medicine Center. Almost one third of pregnant women experience problems serious enough to be classified 'high risk.' Akron Children's has five maternal/fetal medicine specialists to help them and their unborn babies. Anchoring our special clinical section on minimally invasive surgery is our third feature story — on the advancing field of bariatric surgery. At UH, weight loss surgery has rapidly evolved as new minimally invasive procedures, including robotic-assisted bariatric surgery, continue to offer more options. In our business section are articles written by local lawyers, accountants and finance experts. And in our ongoing signature columns, you'll find news about local physicians, hospitals and research. We hope you'll enjoy these and all of the other stories and articles in this issue. As always, feel free to contact me with any comments or suggestions.
