John Jakob, MD Huang Leads NIH Study on Tumor Cell Detection Alex Y. Huang, MD, a hematologist/oncologist, Alex Y. Huang, MD and assistant professor of Pediatrics, Pathology and Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) School of Medicine, is leading a five-year National Institutes of Health study on how tumor cells avoid detection by the body's immune system. CWRU School of Medicine received a $1.6 million grant for the study from the National Cancer Institute. Dr. Huang will examine immune tolerance Fred Rothstein, MD that keeps tumor cells from being detected by the immune system. The study also will test whether modifying the environment where tumor and immune cell interactions occur with inflam- matory chemokines will activate unresponsive immune cells. Dr. Huang's lab has been at the forefront of devel- oping an advanced imaging technique — intravital 2-photon laser scanning microscopy — to directly visualize tumor and immune cell interactions in real time. This technology is designed to provide a powerful in vivo experimental platform to monitor future anti-cancer or immunotherapy approaches. His research is among the first attempts to directly visualize the tolerance of immune cells by metastatic cancer cells in the draining lymph node at a cellular level. Jakob gives Cancer Presentation, Receives Merit Award John Jakob, MD, Ph.D., a hematologist/oncolo- gist with Summa Physicians Inc., co-authored an article titled "NRAS mutation status is an independent prognostic factor in metastatic melanoma" and was accepted for publication in Cancer, an Interdisciplinary International Journal of the American Cancer Society. Dr. Jakob presented on this topic at the 2011 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting and received a Merit Award — which recognizes the work of oncology fellows who are first-time authors of outstanding meeting abstracts — from The ASCO Conquer Cancer Foundation for his research.
