+++++++++++++++++++++++++++ + + +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ FROM THE PUBLISHER +++ +++ TT HANK YOU VERY much for reading the March/April issue of MD News. Once again, we examine the world-class health care available right here in Central New York. Our cover story features Syracuse Orthopedic Specialists (SOS). Readers of our magazine and observers of the health care scene in Central New York know SOS well. Led by President Perry Cooke, M.D., and CEO Michael Humphrey, SOS is home to some of the finest orthopedic surgeons in the region. SOS is a group on the move, and as it progresses, the level of orthopedic patient care in our community improves along with it. Our story involves the opening of SOS PLUS, an after-hours clinic, and partnerships the group has forged with Syracuse University and St. Joseph's Hospital Health Center. SOS continues to position itself as a pillar of our community, and in a time when some are shrinking from new investment and community involvement, SOS embraces the concept. Our interior feature is on Med-Express Documents in Chittenango, NY. Med-Express was founded by Carol Anthony with the physician and patient in mind. In the age of EMRs and meaningful use requirements, the use of a medical transcription company may ease the practice transition. Carol's company is unique — she hires nurses as transcriptionists. It is Carol's philosophy that having nurses do the transcribing is a step up from having this done by non-health care providers. Understanding the terminology, the environment and the doctors themselves is a natural advantage. In this time of ever more burdens on a physician's time, it may be logical to use a medical transcription company to interface with EMRs. Carol is one of the most dedicated health care professionals you can meet and is always attempting to position her company to better serve the physician's needs and improve patient care. In his column, Jerry Hoffman, Executive Vice President of the Onondaga County Medical Society, assesses the proposed New York State budget. In doing so, Jerry notes that the budget does not contain the medical liability reforms that were present in the 2011 –2012 budget. Although not a surprise — as the Medicaid Redesign Team, which had recommended a cap on awards for non-economic damages a year ago, did not include that in its report this year — it is still a disappointment. Another item in the governor's proposed budget would establish a New York Health Insurance Exchange, as required by federal health care reform law. It would be very helpful if a practicing physician were appointed to the board that will oversee the exchange's operations. Once again, I would like to thank all those who come together to create our magazine. Here at MD News, we are dedicated to delivering an engaging reader experience — one with real local relevance.
