The typical cylinder in a traditional closed MRI has been stretched to provide a much wider opening, handling a 500-pound weight limit. MAPPING THE GEOGRAPHIC REACH The SOS investment in the new GE wide-bore MR increases accessibility, patient comfort and clinical productivity. to four hours and five minutes. That can be an unnecessary delay in treatment for patients with orthopedic injuries for whom the emergency department is often the only care setting option in the evening or on the weekend. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that emergency departments see approximately 4.3 million sports- and recreation-related injuries annually. The newly opened SOS PLUS clinic provides an alternative: an after-hours orthopedic walk-in center dedicated to expeditious evaluation and treatment of fac- tures, joint dislocations, sprains, strains, and all other sports- and work-related injuries. "We felt there was a want and need in the area," says Todd Battaglia, M.D., M.S., orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine spe- cialist at SOS. "This allows patients to obtain specialty care for their emergency orthopedic injuries without having to filter through the normal, time-consuming channels that it often takes before they reach our offices." The elimination of the unnec- essary visits to the emergency department and even to a primary care provider offers significant benefits from a clinical point of view, in addition to the patient's personal convenience.
