+++++++++++++++++++++++++++ + + +++++++++++++++++++++++++++ FROM THE PUBLISHER +++ +++ H H ELLO, AND WELCOME to the March issue of MD News Lower Hudson/Bronx. In the 1980s, Montefiore Medical Center surgeons developed the Einstein repair for the mitral valve, a major contribution to the progression of valve repair surgical technique. Today, experts at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein School of Medicine continue to collaborate to bring science to the heart of medicine. In this issue, we highlight the recently launched Comprehensive Heart Valve Repair Program at the Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart & Vascular Care. Internationally renowned cardiac specialist Robert E. Michler, M.D., has partnered with Mario J. Garcia, M.D., a leader in the development and clinical advancement of cardiac diagnostic technology, to provide the most advanced treatments for conditions and diseases of the aortic and mitral valves. Also in this issue, we examine the pros and cons of patients using the Internet to self-diagnose. Recent reports indicate that eight out of 10 people surf the Web for insight into their health, and seeking health information on the Internet only stands to increase. While some patients will believe inaccurate information they find online — which could cause them to doubt or disregard their physicians' advice — many patients are simply attempting to empower themselves to become active participants in their health care. Just as self-diagnosis can be detrimental to the physician/patient relationship, so too can outright dismissal of an empowered patient by a physician. Read on to learn how to avoid difficult situations with patients and ensure the Internet is an asset, not a liability, for both patient and physician. As you flip through the pages of this publication, you'll also find pertinent information about medical research and trending topics, in addition to news from the local health care community. My goal is to spark an open dialogue among health care providers through the pages of MD News Lower Hudson/ Bronx. Feel free to further the conversation by contacting me.
