CHI FRANCISCAN HEALTH /// chifranciscan.org 2 Meet Our New Providers news briefs A CLEAR VIEW OF BREAST HEALTH Each year, one in eight U.S. women are aected by breast cancer. In the last 30 years, death rates from cancer have decreased thanks to early detection through mammography. New mammography technology called 3-D mammography, or tomosynthesis, can detect breast cancer at even earlier stages, when it's most curable and treatment is less invasive. Three-dimensional mammography takes traditional 2-D mammography technology and overlays it with an x-ray arm that moves in a sweeping arc during the exam. When the radiologist reviews the mammogram, he or she can then look at a much clearer picture of the breast tissue. Three-dimensional mammography will be oered beginning in November at Highline Diagnostics, located at 275 SW 160th St. in Burien. The new technology is made possible by the Highline Medical Center Foundation and generous local philanthropists. NEW GRANT HELPS SERVE VULNERABLE PATIENTS The Mission and Ministry Fund at Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) announced a $1.2 million grant to Highline Health Connections, a program at Highline Medical Center serving the community's most medically vulnerable patients. Highline Health Connections, started this year through donations to Highline Medical Center Foundation, provides care navigation to individuals who have complex health issues and who have barriers to care, such as a lack of transportation to doctor's visits or poor nutrition. The program's goal is to help 80 to 100 people this year and expand to 200 by 2017. "There are many reasons that some people nd themselves back in the emergency room or hospital over and over again. It may be because they can't aord their medications, or they may have no transportation to attend provider appointments or pick up medications," explained Kim Redifer, program manager for Highline Health Connections. "We help people connect with community resources and create a plan to overcome these barriers."
