CHI FRANCISCAN HEALTH /// chifranciscan.org 12 HIGHLINE MEDICAL CENTER provided such significant medical support to the Brock family that Bob and Lu decided to continue their generous financial support even after moving to California. WHEN IT COUNTS The Brock family resided in the Burien community for decades, and whenever a family member was critically ill or in need of more acute care and surgery, Highline was a home away from home. With neighbors and friends on staff, a natural sense of community formed that became unbreakable. "When my dad retired at age 60, he could have chosen anything to invest his retirement years in," said Vikki Brock, PhD. "His commitment to serve on the Highline Medical Center Board and Foundation allowed him to use his leadership to give back in a way that fulfilled the community and him." Bob and Lu Brock set up a trust in the early 1990s and designated Highline to receive a legacy gift, ensuring the Brocks continue to support the most advanced health care practices for the community. SUPPORTING A NONPROFIT "Highline has a lot to offer the community in terms of top quality medical service, and it's a not-for-profit hospital," said David D. Hawthorne, president of Hawthorne & Co., CPA and longtime Foundation board member. "Highline doesn't receive tax dollars like other tax-based hospitals in the area and depends largely on gifts and donations." Established in 1981, Highline Medical Center Foundation raises funds to provide direct patient services and capital needs for the medical center. It also provides funds to support Highline Health Connections, a growing program that connects our most vulnerable community members to life- changing care well past discharge from the hospital. According to Hawthorne, Highline offers free community seminars with expert speakers to make education about estate planning and legacy gifts more accessible. Those who decide to give back become members of our Legacy Society and meet with other legacy supporters through annual social events and planned seminars. "People may not have a lot of money in their lifetime to give in direct support of Highline, and that's where estate money and legacy gifts come into play," Hawthorne said. "We hope our community members will be friends with Highline and show their friendship by leaving a donation or legacy gift."
