Active in the medical community and generous with his time, he is a member of numerous medical societies and gives community lectures in his areas of expertise. Dr. Raj primarily treats spinal condi- tions, as well as other muscle and joint pain. He finds that disc problems con- tribute to much of his patients' distress. Additionally, non-spinal issues may cause back pain for some patients. "Do not think of the disc as the only cause of spine pain," he advises. "If you take 100 people [with back pain], 40 may have disc pain. Thirty may have facet arthritis or small joints in the spine causing pain. The remaining 30 may have sacroiliac joint pain; that is, pain in the joint in the buttock where the pelvis joins the leg — a frequently misdiagnosed condition."
