Circle of Friends Dorothy Kaplan, an 86-year-old Applewood Estates resident, has made many friends through the years with her drive to share her creative talents— braiding and hooking rugs, crocheting, and teaching origami. "I gave lessons on rug hooking and braiding, taught adult education classes, and gave lectures at area women's clubs," Dorothy says. "Later, I worked in activities at Presbyterian Homes and The Manor Health and Rehabilitation Center in the mid-1970s. Who would have thought I would return to The Manor as a patient?" FULL CIRCLE OF CARE Dorothy was diagnosed with pancreatitis in 2011. An Applewood Estates resident since 2006, it was an easy transition to surgery at CentraState Medical Center, not far from home. After surgery, she recovered and received subacute care at The Manor, located on CentraState's campus. After rehabilitation at The Manor, she was back home again at Applewood Estates, completing a convenient and seamless circle of care. "We provide superior customer service to short- and long-term care residents, offering a seamless continuum of care," says Alison Fitzpatrick-Durski, LNHA, administrator at The Manor. "We follow up with each patient after discharge. During our follow-up conversation, Dorothy let me know the sticker to 'drink more water' on her prescription had covered up the dosage. Our 'check-in' process after discharge helps with the little things that can prevent problems in the future." PUBLIC ACCESS Area residents might remember Dorothy from her years on Monmouth Cablevision, hosting her own show, "Paper Folding Plus," featuring origami and other paper crafts as well as special guests. She always has paper, and origami provides a personal healing touch—even in rehabilitation. "I made a basketball hoop to go on my eating table and a wad of paper for others to make a basket," Dorothy says. "Origami hopping frogs can also cheer people up with a laugh. I really enjoyed the tour of The Manor, remembering residents and seeing all the changes. Back home now, they take care of me superbly, and I can express myself through origami and other crafts, making boxes, cards, and displays for my fellow residents, who are like a family. I have everything I need." [PHOTO] Dorothy Kaplan, a resident of Applewood Estates, relied on the care provided by The Manor Health and Rehabilitation Center following a bout of pancreatitis.
