Several Longmont United Hospital employees are extending the hospital's healing mission far beyond the communities we serve through the Denver-based nonprofit Global Health Connections (GHC) Inc. Conn ecting WHEN LUH MEDICAL Staff Services Director Holly Davis, MBA- HA, assumed her role at the hospital in 2012, she brought with her a passion for GHC, an organization that seeks to solve global health issues through collaboration and educational outreach. GHC's main projects are the Global Water Challenge—an initiative that encourages Denver middle school students to research and propose solutions to local and international water issues—and supporting the new GHC Maternity Center in Léogâne, Haiti, a city left devastated by a powerful 2010 earthquake. Holly is GHC's Executive Director. "When hospital employees heard about my involvement with GHC, they wanted to learn more about the organization and how they could get involved," Holly says. "Amy Johnson [MD, obstetrician/ gynecologist at LUH] started attending some of the events GHC hosted and became enthusiastic about the work. She expressed interest in becoming a GHC Board of Directors member, and GHC welcomed her with open arms. She brings a vast amount of clinical knowledge and experience, as well as a passion that coincides with GHC's mission and vision." Dr. Johnson isn't the only LUH staff member to volunteer with GHC. Medical Staff Coordinator Natalia Gayou also sits on the organization's board, and several hospital employees have helped with the Global Water Challenge or participated in GHC's annual Run for Haiti 5K. A TRIUMPH FOR MATERNAL-FETAL HEALTH The crown jewel of GHC's work is the GHC Maternity Center at Léogâne's CAMEJO Hospital. The center opened in 2015 and helps fill a critical gap in care in a developing country that has high maternal and infant mortality rates. "Only 25 percent of births in Haiti are attended by trained medical personnel," Dr. Johnson says. "I am most proud of the fact that GHC is doing important work in a country that really needs our help. I'm also proud that we're working on projects that are sustainable. We want to make a positive impact that's going to last." › Interested in learning more about GHC? Visit globalhealthconnections.org. MIRRORING A GLOBAL MISSION The involvement of Longmont United Hospital employees with Global Health Connections (GHC) Inc., complements the outreach programs LUH supports in Larimer, Weld and Boulder counties, the missions of which are similar to GHC. "LUH's many programs have inspired GHC to continue our work locally and abroad," says Holly Davis, MBA-HA, Director of Medical Staff Services at LUH and Executive Director of GHC. "The hospital donates time and money to organizations dedicated to advancing women's and children's health and education—the same areas on which GHC focuses. Seeing the impact these organizations have in our community with LUH's help inspires individuals to contribute their time and skills to do good for other communities in need through GHC." THE WORLD ON APRIL 10, more than 80 businesses and countless families will join together in the name of wellness at the 7th Annual Frank Shorter RACE4KIDS' Health 5K and Health Odyssey Expo. Held at the 1STBANK Center, the event is designed to inspire children to take control of personal well-being through fitness. But exercise isn't the only item on the menu at this wellness extravaganza, which will also highlight the science of health. "Our mission is to empower kids to lead healthy and happy lives," says Chris Marchioni, MD, family medicine physician and Executive Director of Healthy Learning Paths. "The event is more than a run. It's an opportunity for the community to rally around the development of our children." A FAMILY AFFAIR The event for families is hosted by a team of visionaries who believe that lifestyle plays a key role in well-being throughout life. Specifically, individuals from Longmont United Hospital and Whole Foods have joined together with Healthy Learning Paths and Olympic gold medalist Frank Shorter to make this event a success. "By laying the foundation for kids when they are young, we can influence them to make healthy decisions later in life," Mr. Shorter says. "When one family member is focused on health, everyone benefits." › For more information about the 7th Annual Frank Shorter RACE4KIDS' Health 5K and Health Odyssey Expo or to register, visit healthylearningpaths. org or runningguru. com and enter "7th Annual Frank Shorter" in the search bar. 303-651-5111 LUHCARES.ORG / 3
