Hea ling Body, Mind and Spirit FROM AN EARLY age, Michelle remembers spending time with her grandparents—a highlight that solidified a passion for working with older adults. When LUH announced plans to start a senior wellness program in 1992, Michelle, then a nurse in the hospital's Telemetry Unit, was hired for the job. She started the hospital's first Patient Advisory Council, and per their guidance, was soon en route to China to observe the cultural differences in caring for older generations. Michelle brought the concepts she learned back to LUH and has helped the hospital create the Health Center of Integrated Therapies— one of the largest hospital-based integrative medicine programs in the country. Her day- to-day responsibilities include coordinating a variety of services, which span from meditation and yoga to herbal remedies, massage, acupuncture and nutritional counseling. But Michelle's favorite part of her job is listening to her patients' stories and using the stories of their lives to create the building blocks for wellness and health promotion. "Older adults can be role models for younger generations," Michelle says. "By caring for themselves, they teach their families how to eat well, exercise and nurture their bodies with integrated therapies like massage and acupuncture." Outside of her busy career, Michelle enjoys spending time with her husband and their five grown children, tending to her farm and heading to the beach in Mexico when she gets a chance. › To schedule an appointment at the Health Center of Integrated Therapies, call 303-651-5188. 303-651-5111 LUHCARES.ORG / 7
