Winthrop-University Hospital recently held a trauma response demonstration and ribbon-cutting ceremony to announce the opening of its new $6 million Trauma Center, which is fully equipped for adult and pediatric patients. This state-of-the-art, 7,500-square-foot facility officially opened to receive patients on Jan. 12. Supporters of South Nassau Communities Hospital raised a net total of $607,763 at the Hospital's 2015 Annual Carnation Ball, held Nov. 7 at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. South Nassau administrators, board and medical staff members, as well as many of the region's healthcare executives, state and local public officials, and business and community leaders, were among the 628 guests in attendance. Money raised by the 2015 Carnation Ball will support South Nassau's Emergency Department Expansion Campaign. The campaign is a five-year, $10 million fundraising initiative to help support a $60 million renovation and expansion of the Oceanside Emergency Department (ED), which serves residents of the South Shore, from Queens to Suffolk. The expansion project will increase the ED's square footage from 16,000 to 30,000 square feet, increasing its overall size by 87 percent and providing the necessary room to accommodate in excess of 80,000 patient visits each year as well as establishing dedicated areas for behavioral health and pediatric emergencies. The ED currently sees some 65,000 patients a year. It was designed to handle 35,000 annually. Scientists at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research have discovered a new, personalized approach to diagnosing low back pain. The findings from a clinical study show that serum levels of the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 vary in individuals with lumbar intervertebral disc disease and that biochemical profiling of circulat - ing cytokines may assist in refining personalized diagnoses of disc diseases. The findings, published in Arthritis Research & Therapy, suggest that patients with low back pain have low-grade systemic inflammation and that biochemical profiling of circulating cytokines can assist in diagnosing those with low back pain. This will help low back pain sufferers get the correct diagnosis in a shorter amount of time. North Shore-LIJ Health System has entered the new year with a new birth of its own.
