South Nassau Communities Hospital President and CEO Richard J. Murphy has been elected as Secretar y of the board of trustees for the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) and as a member of the HANYS Executive Committee for a one-year term that began Jan. 1. HANYS' volunteer board of trustees is responsible for managing the association's activities. The association is the statewide advocate for more than 500 nonprofit and public hospitals, nursing homes, home care agencies, and other healthcare organizations in New York. Its mission is to advance the health of individuals and communities by providing leadership, representation, and service to healthcare providers and systems across the entire continuum of care. "Health care today is increasingly com - plex for patients and providers of care," Murphy says. "The state and federal governments as well as private insurers are pushing for reforms and increased efficiencies. This all puts pressure on nonprofit hospitals while demand for services has not decreased. HANYS plays a critical role in advocating for hospitals and the com - munities they serve." West Islip resident Robert Carlin, MD, has been named Chair of Internal Medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. An internist and pulmonologist with a private practice in Babylon since 1991, Dr. Carlin has been associated with Good Samaritan for 25 years and has served in a variety of leadership positions at the hospital, including current roles as President of the Medical Board and Chair of the Performance Improvement Committee. Additionally, since 2014 he has served as Medical Director of Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, which, like Good Samaritan, is a member of Catholic Health Services of Long Island. Dr. Carlin is a graduate of St George's University School of Medicine in Grenada. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Jersey City Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in pulmonary medicine at Nassau University Medical Center. The Emergency Department of Forest Hills Hospital has new leadership and a new vision to meet the healthcare needs of the more than 54,000 patients that are treated there each year. Manish Sharma, DO, serves as Chair of Emergency Medicine at Forest Hills Hospital, taking over the position for - merly held by Michael Guttenberg, DO, the new Medical Director of the Center for Emergency Services and Clinical Preparedness for Northwell Health, the health system to which Forest Hills and 20 other metro-area hospitals belong. Assisting Dr. Sharma is Mark Tang, DO, who was recently appointed as Associate Chair of Emergency Medicine at the hospital. An Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College, Dr. Sharma serves as an examiner for the American Board of Emergency Medicine and has been published nationally in peer- reviewed journals, including Annals of Emergency Medicine and Academic Emergency Medicine. After receiving his bachelor's de - gree in biology at New York University, Dr. Sharma earned his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, and a Masters in Business Administration at the New York Institute of Technology.
