THIS YEAR, Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital celebrates 90 years of caring for children. We were founded in 1926 as the American Legion Hospital for Crippled Children to care for children with polio and other crippling disorders. We have continued to grow for nine decades, thanks to ongoing community support, dedicated employees and visionary leaders. Our commitment to children's health gained a new focus after the development of the polio vaccine. In 1967, we re-opened as All Children's Hospital, dedicated to meeting a wide range of medical needs of infants, children and teens. Our name was inspired by a line from 20th-century poet Carl Sandburg: "There is only one child in all the world, and the child's name is all children." Over the next few decades we continued to expand our ability to care for the region's most critically ill children and refine our mission to serve patients through treatment, education, research and advocacy. In 2011, the hospital became a fully integrated member of Johns Hopkins Medicine, the nation's first medical school and the model for modern academic and pediatric medicine. The milestone marked the beginning of a deeper transformation for our St. Petersburg campus, which has continued with an official name change this spring. Some of the most visible changes that have already occurred—such as the creation of four institutes for cardiac care, cancer and blood disorders, neurosciences, and maternal/fetal/neonatal medicine—are engines for discovery, learning and cutting-edge care that will continue to grow over the coming years. We thank you for joining us on our journey. Together we are leading the future of pediatric health care for children throughout Florida and across the globe.
