LOCAL South Nassau Communities Hospital announced its plan to construct a four-story, 58,000-square-foot addition to the southwest corner of the hospital. The addition will feature a new, medically advanced criti - cal care patient unit with up to 24 additional beds and will modernize and expand its operating rooms. The estimated $130-million project also includes the upgrade of the hospital's emergency electrical sys- tem as well as the construction of a new, energy-efficient central utility plant with back-up heating and air conditioning systems. The four-story addition in Oceanside doubles the size of the Emergency Services Department, increasing the number of its treatment spaces, expanding and improving waiting areas, and adding separate treatment areas for pediatric, geriatric and behav - ioral patients. The new structure will house additional critical care beds to meet growing demand for critical care services and new operating suites. The new operating rooms allow for the renova - tion of existing operating rooms, some of which are 40 years old and do not meet current space needs for operating suites. Long Island Jewish Medical Center, a member of Northwell Health, has been named a 2016 Women's Choice Award winner as one of America's Best Hospitals for Obstetrics and Cancer Care. The New Hyde Park hospital is one of 432 hospitals nationwide and 12 in New York state to qualify for the evidence-based designation for obstetrics, signifying a commitment to meeting the highest standards in maternity services. It is also one of 365 hospitals nationwide and 11 in the state to earn this award for cancer care. This distinction identifies the country's best healthcare institutions based on clinical performance, as well as criteria that examine female patient satisfaction and what women say they want from a hospital, including quality physician communications and responsiveness from nurses and support staff. Representatives from Peconic Bay Medical Center (PBMC) and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation formally dedicated the noninvasive vascular lab, an integral component of the Medical Center's Vascular Program. The geography of the East End of Long Island poses a chal - lenge for accessing resources needed to treat such conditions. The next-nearest vascular lab is more than 30 miles west of PBMC. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation donated $277,000 to fund the build out of the Vascular Program, which will include renovation of the space and purchase sophisticated equipment necessary for noninva - sive procedures. The Stavros Niarchos Foundation, founded by the Greek shipping magnate, has made grant commit - ments of $1.8 billion since its inception in 1996. A global phil- anthropic presence, the Foundation has given 3,301 grants to nonprofit organizations in 111 nations around the world. John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson has been ap- proved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for new diagnostic radiology and psychiatry residency programs. Both programs begin July 1. The diagnostic radiology residency, di- rected by Jared Dunkin, MD, is a four-year program that will accept three residents per year, for a total of 12 residents. The psychiatry residency, directed by Noam Fast, MD, is a four-year program that will accept five residents per year, for a total of 20 residents. The new residencies join the existing internal medicine and transi - tional year residency programs in Mather's Graduate Medical Education Program. The Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit (NSCU) at North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) has received the Silver Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (A ACN). NSUH is one of just 18 hospitals with critical care units in New York state and the only one in the tri-state area to receive this prestigious recognition. The Beacon Award for Excellence, a significant milestone on the path to delivering exceptional patient care and healthy work envi - ronments, recognizes unit caregivers who successfully improve patient outcomes and align practices with A ACN's six Healthy Work Environment Standards. Units that achieve this three- year, three-level award with a gold, silver or bronze designation meet national criteria consistent with Magnet Recognition, the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the National Quality Healthcare Award.
