When In Doubt, HERE'S A CR ASH COURSE ON WHEN TO TOSS OLD MAKEUP. Many of us are guilty of keeping makeup longer than we should, but did you know that it can be hazardous to your health? Using expired makeup can cause problems that range from minor skin irritations to major bacterial infections. LET IT GO If you're in the dark about when to toss cosmetics, here are some tips. THROW IT OUT! A "DIET" L ABEL ON FOODS IS EASILY MISLEADING WHEN IT COMES TO HEALTH. Don't be taken in by food labels. Something that claims to have less sugar or fat may still not be the best choice. "Many low-fat products will have added sugar or salt to compensate for the taste," says Katherine Stephens-Bogard, MS, RDN, CDE, Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist with Washington Health System. "Looking at the ingredients is more important than the label on the front." CLEAN EATING "If you're able, buy locally grown fruits and vegetables," Stephens-Bogard says. "If it's locally grown, you'll have a better idea where it came from and know more about its chances of having heavy amounts of herbicides or other concerning substances." For individuals with diabetes, Stephens-Bogard suggests looking at more than just sugar. For example, a sugar-free label may be misleading. All carbohydrates turn to sugar, though they may start in dierent forms. "To optimize health, move more and eat less," Stephens-Bogard says. D on' t Believe the Hype » Lipstick and Gloss—While gloss expires aer about six months, lipstick can last for up to three years. Just keep watch on the texture and the way it smells. If you notice any major changes, it's time to move on. » Foundation—Liquids and powders expire at very dierent times, but for both, if you notice the color changing, that's a sign its usefulness has come to an end. Liquid foundation expires at between eight and 12 months, while powder foundation is generally only good for six months. » Mascara—Typically, your favorite mascara has a two-to-three-month shelf life. Aer that, it could start drying up, smelling funny and even accumulating bacteria. Don't risk your eyes. Stop using it.
