SEE YOU AGAIN Following up his multi-platinum "See You Again" on Wiz Khalifa's Furious 7 soundtrack, with Nine Track Mind, which includes "Marvin Gaye" (and features Meghan Trainor), Charlie Puth (his dad is of German ancestry; his mom is Jewish) appears at 98.7 Amp Radio's Amp Live 2016 along with Iggy Azalea, Daya and Melanie Martinez. Barkin's character's first name is "Janine," but everybody calls her "Smurf." AT THE MOVIES Opening Friday, June 24: Free State of Jones is based on a fascinating true story. In 1864, Newt Knight (Matthew McConaughey), a Southern white farmer who lived in in southwestern Mississippi's Jones County, led other local white farmers and slaves in an armed revolt against the Confederacy that created the "Free State of Jones." He continued his struggle against injustice during and after Reconstruction and had two families — one with his first, white wife — and another with a black wife, after separating from his first wife. The director and screenwriter is Gary Ross, 59 (The Hunger Games; Seabiscuit). Smithsonian magazine's website has a great article about Ross, how he came to make the film and becoming an amateur historian, consulting sources to ensure the film's veracity. It also covers Knight's life history and how his many descendants form, to this day, a separate group in the county, not quite accepted by blacks or whites. To see the article, visit smithsonianmag.com and search "Free State of Jones." Independence Day: Resurgence is a sequel to the mega-hit Independence Day. The basic plot: The bad aliens who almost conquered Earth in 1996 are back and appear to be able to overcome the defenses that Earth's countries have cre- ated in anticipation of their return.
