The award is given annually by the Detroit City Council for outstanding service to the city. "Repair the World adds to the rich fabric of the communities in District 6," said Councilwoman Raquel Castaneda-Lopez. "From the layout of their office to their sponsored events to their commu- nity partnerships, Repair the World has done a tremendous job at bringing people together to promote diversity and inclusion." Repair the World is devoted to engaging young Jewish adults as volunteers — empowering them to transform their neighborhoods, cities and lives through meaningful service experiences rooted in Jewish values. Detroit is one of four cities in Repair's flagship Communities program, which partners with local nonprofits to engage young adults in social change around education and food justice in neighborhoods. Detroit's workshop space on Bagley Avenue serves as a welcoming environ- ment for individuals and community groups from the neighborhood and city- wide. "We are deeply honored to receive the Spirit of Detroit Award," said Ben Falik, director of Repair the World: Detroit. "More importantly, we take to heart the great responsibility that comes with this honor — to continue engaging young adults and building bridges between different communities to help those in need." * Ben Falik REPAIR THE WORLD HONORED BY DETROIT MAAS CULTURE PRIZES AWARDED TO ARTISTS The Benard L. Maas Foundation, in partner- ship with the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit, recently named visual artist Barry Roth and video artist and producer Oren Goldenberg the recipients of the annual Benard L. Maas Prize for Achievement in Jewish Culture and Continuity. Barry Roth is the son of a Hungarian immi- grant whose family arrived in the United States in the 1920s. Raised in Northwest Detroit, Roth has drawn on his Jewish cultural background as one of the sources that have profoundly influ- enced his artistic vision. For more than a decade, Roth taught photog- raphy in the Art & Art History Department at Wayne State University where he collaborated with Cary Loren (a former Maas Prize recipient), on the art magazine Nightcrawlers; a complete set of nine issues was purchased by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Oren Goldenberg is a video artist and pro- ducer based in Detroit. His work ranges from experimental dance to political satire, social documentary to feature film, multi-media instal- lations to fake Kickstarter videos. Goldenberg is a 2013 Kresge Fellow in the Visual Arts, Best Filmmaker (Real Detroit, 2011) and Best Michigan Filmmaker (AAFF, 2006). A graduate of the University of Michigan, Goldberg has created films and videos for 15 years. He is also the owner of Cass Corridor Films. A prize of $5,000 has been presented to each artist. * Barry Roth Oren Goldenberg
