This metabolic increase is caused by cha nges in a mitochondria l enz y me ca lled arginase. Using a mouse model of asthma, they showed that a rg ina se activation a nd availability is enhanced, a llowing the cel ls to produce more energ y during cellular respiration. Interestingly, they fou nd t hat t he i ncrea se i n met abo - lism suppressed infla mmation in the lungs a nd protected a sthmatic mice from developing more severe forms of the disease. "Our results indicate that enhanced a rginine metabolism may counteract infla mmation a nd possibly o¥er pro- tection for a sthmatic patients," says Dr. Erzurum. "It also supports mounting evidence that bioenergetic changes and inf la mmation underlie both a sthma and obesity." Asthma and obesity have long been associated with each other, but a definitive biological link between the diseases has not yet been discovered. More studies are needed to clarify the exact mechanisms of arginase upregulation. About 22 million Americans su¥er from asthma, which causes wheezing, coughing and shortness of breath and in some cases can lead to death. Exercise, allergies and airborne dust can set o¥ asthma attacks. The study's findings are published in the current issue of The Journal of Clinical Investigation: http://www.jci.org/arti cles/view/82925. ■ Link Between Asthma and Metabolism STUDY SHOWS M D N E W S .
