Sound Financial Future BY STEVE BARRETT APOCRYPHAL OR NOT, that principle can be applied to physician fi nances: Chip away the stuff that doesn't work. Here are some of the more common mistakes physicians ma ke in handling their money, as outlined for A M A Wire by William Zelenik, CEO of Tennessee-based Millennium Brokerage Group: + Picking an adviser on the recommendation of a friend. Getting advice from colleagues is fi ne, Zelenik says, but your goals and theirs may not be the same. Take time to fi nd the right fi t, he adds, and check out a potential adviser's Central Registration Depository number, provided by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority. It will alert you to any issues related to that individual. + Sidelining your spouse. A spouse's input on decisions can help you hew to a conservative path, according to Zelenik, and fosters wise budgeting and the pursuit of mutually agreed-upon goals. + Going on autopilot. You wouldn't advise a patient to skip a yearly wellness exam, and you shouldn't tr y that with investments. Fully assess your fi nances at least annually — preferably quarterly. + Taking a do-it-yourself approach. "That's kind of like performing surgery on yourself," Zelenik tells AMA Wire. A good adviser can help ensure you're prioritizing the right things, such as paying down debt. n M D N E W S .C O M /// M D N E W S M I D H U D S O N ■ 2 016 0 5 F I N A N C E ❰❰❰❰❰
