I HAD AN interesting discussion with a friend who has owned and operated a profitable company for many years. She
said that in her experience, athletes often make the best employees. They usually possess qualities that are valuable in the
workplace, such as self-discipline, time management, perseverance and being a team player. While athletes have personal goals
they want to achieve, they also know they need to collaborate with their teammates for success.
"And there's one more very important thing about athletes," she said with a smile. "They're extremely coachable."
Athletes are typically open to suggestions and don't take critiques the wrong way, she explained. They want to reach their
potential and look to their coach for advice and guidance. This kind of attitude can translate into an excellent employee.
This all made good sense to me, and I began to look at what she said in the broader picture. No doubt we could all become
better humans—not just better employees—if we had the characteristics she listed. Sometimes it can be hard to admit that we
aren't experts at everything we do in life. But if we can be open to learning from the expertise and hard-earned experience of
others, our opportunities could become limitless.
