PROJECT: Hopkinton, MA
BUILDER: E.W. Tarca Construction
ARCHITECT: Tom Catalano
"A teardown project in Hopkinton was comprised of over 10,000 square feet, including the basement," Ed says. "This project was done
for returning clients who already knew architect Thomas Catalano of Boston, who performed a remodel for them in New Hampshire.
Tom worked with a design team that included the homeowner; Randi Skiffington of Interiors by Randi in Moultonborough, New
Hampshire; and me. I found the lakefront site for the homeowners when it first came on the market. Engineers spent a full year planning
the project before beginning construction. Thomas did a marvelous job making this house feel comfortable and cozy despite its size.
There is an indoor swimming pool off the basement. Most materials in the pool house, including the beams, were made of PVC but
painted to simulate wood. Also there's an exercise room overlooking the pool and an adjoining billiards room/pub with a fireplace. Some
Old World details were built out with cherry wood and reclaimed chestnut floors from Maine. We applied a hard oil finish, like the old
days, rather than urethane. This way, if the floors ever need renovation, the homeowners need only to recoat with the same hard oil
finish without having to sand and strip old materials. New England fieldstone was used on the base of the walkout basement and parts
of the front and side elevations, as well as the chimney, for a consistent look. Other materials included Indiana buff cut limestone trims
in the round bays in the rear of the home, and on chimney caps, window headers and the front entryway."
