PROJECT: Hopkinton, MA
BUILDER: E. W. Tarca Construction
ARCHITECT: John Dvorsack
LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT: Dana Schock & Assoc.
"This 7,500-square-foot custom-built home was erected upon a challenging site," Ed says. "The street-
level grade was normal, but the rear of the property sloped deeply toward a lake. The homeowners
were friends of two of our previous customers. We were familiar with the location because we had built
here before. John was able to set the home down from the street so that the backyard feels like you're
on a lake in rural New Hampshire — but you're actually just a few minutes from Interstate 495 and the
Massachusetts Turnpike. The home also features spectacular views of the lake, which were part of the
homeowners' wishes and John's architectural plan. The property was cleared very selectively to provide
those views. The house's coffered ceilings and millwork were produced in our own shop. You could call
it a smart home because of the abundance of advanced technology, such as automated shades that open
and close during the day for sun protection, a full audio/visual entertainment set-up, and advanced
security system and HVAC, and automatic lighting with full remote access. But what I like to call the
hidden secret of this project is the backyard and how the beautiful stonework, terracing and rounded
veneer walls add functional elegance rarely seen on the back of a house."
