16 August 25 • 2016 metro » T he Well, Metro Detroit's inclusive Jewish community-building, education and spirituality out- reach initiative, and the Jewish News are partnering on a project, "36 Under 36," to recognize young leaders, humanitar- ians, educators, social activ- ists and entrepreneurs who are reshaping and broaden- ing the Jewish community. Honorees will be featured in the Jewish News and later this year at a community celebration hosted by the JN and The Well. Rabbi Dan Horwitz (son of JN pub- lisher and executive editor Arthur Horwitz) of The Well brought the idea to the JN. "It should come as no surprise that the JN is close to my heart," he said. "It's where many of us turn each week to celebrate, to mourn, to reminisce, and to feel pride in the unique and beautiful tapestry that is the Metro Detroit Jewish community. As we seek to highlight incredible young folks having outsized impacts, partnering with the JN was clearly a logical choice." According to Horwitz, 36 Under 36 is seeking to honor unsung heroes in the community: the 10-year-old who has started her own nonprofit, the young adult who has assumed the helm of a family business and taken it to new heights, or the social entrepreneur who is making both profit and impact. "In short," Horwitz said, "the people who give of themselves to the community in robust — and often thankless — ways. In essence, the kinds of people we admire and aspire to be, whose accom- plishments we want to cel- ebrate and who we want the world to know make their home in Metro Detroit." Nominations are due by Sept. 15. A group of nine volunteer judges (none of whom is affiliated with The Well or the JN) will be reviewing submissions and deciding on the 36. Winners will be announced in the paper mid-November and recognized at a community celebration planned for mid-December. To nominate someone, log on to www. meetyouatthewell.org/36-under-36 and scroll to the bottom of the page to access the nomination form. * NOMINATE A YOUNG PERSON MAKING AN IMPACT FOR THIS SPECIAL HONOR. O n Monday, Sept. 19, Chefs Reva Constantine (Great Lakes Culinary Center), Derik Watson (Bistro 82) and Sarah Welch (Republic Tavern) will compete in an exciting culinary bat- tle that will test their cooking creativity and skills. Like the television show MasterChef, these chefs will be presented with an assortment of ingre- dients and quick-fire challenges. Michelle Bommarito, a local accomplished chef and TV/radio person- ality, will emcee. All proceeds benefit the Friendship Circle, which provides pro- grams and services to individuals with special needs. The event starts at 7 p.m. at the Friendship Circle's Soul Center and Soul Cafe, an art gallery and restaurant in West Bloomfield staffed by young adults with special needs. Tickets are $75. In addition to the competition, guests will enjoy desserts, interactive cooking demonstrations, question-and-answer sessions with the guest chefs as well as a silent auction. Those making a donation of $200 or more will serve as sous chefs and assist the chefs during the competition. Audience members will also bid on the opportunity to taste the dishes and select the winner. The event is hosted by Jennifer Lovy, parent of a 10-year-old with autism who has been participating in Friendship Circle programs since age 2. The Lovy family has raised approximately $50,000 for the organization out of gratitude for the support and services it provides to local families living with a child with special needs. Space is limited. Register online at friendshipcircle.org/masterchef. Event sponsors are Event Bliss, Miller Canfield and Masserman Photography. * Michelle Bommarito Chefs' Delight Join famous chefs in event to benefit Friendship Circle. This seat is waiting for you!
