A LONGMONT NATIVE, Dr. Donahue traces the beginnings of his interest in healthcare to high school. His aptitude for science led him to the University of Colorado Boulder, where he pursued an undergraduate degree in biology. For the next three years, Dr. Donahue worked as an emergency medical technician for an ambulance service in Northern Colorado—an experience that solidified his desire to pursue a career in medicine. COMING FULL CIRCLE Dr. Donahue completed his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and then accepted a commission in the U.S. Navy. He chose to specialize in general surgery. "General surgery gave me a broad base of medical knowledge, as well as the skills and tools needed to intervene and perform operations," Dr. Donahue says. "The specialty fits my personality well because I enjoy having that dual skill set." Dr. Donahue completed his general surgery internship and residency at the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Portsmouth, Virginia. His naval service took him to Japan and Afghanistan. After he finished his time in the Navy, he and his wife knew it was time to come home. "We were ready to return to Colorado, but we didn't know where in Colorado we would be," Dr. Donahue says. "When the opportunity arose at LUH, it was a perfect fit." THE HOMETOWN ADVANTAGE Dr. Donahue began practicing full time at LUH on Aug. 1. He was initially nervous about taking care of the community in which he grew up, but his nerves soon gave way to excitement. "My family has a long history in Longmont, and I've spent most of my life here," Dr. Donahue says. "Having that community connection makes practicing medicine even more meaningful. It's not just a job for me; it's a passion. I look forward to serving and earning the respect and trust of my community." › To learn more about our general surgery services, visit luhcares.org and select "General Surgery" from the "Hospital Services" menu. When David Donahue, DO, FACS, left Colorado to pursue his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, he knew he wanted to return to the Centennial State to establish his medical practice. Longmont United Hospital is pleased to welcome Dr. Donahue home. THE CALL OF THE WILD One of the things David Donahue, DO, FACS, general surgeon, loves most about Colorado is the incredible outdoor recreation. Dr. Donahue and his wife are both avid skiers and enjoy hiking and camping in the mountains—pastimes they're looking forward to sharing with their two young daughters. to His Roots Getting Back 303.651.5111 LUHCARES.ORG / 7
