CELEBRATING VOLUNTEERS Your heart is pounding, sweat is dripping, and you're trying to slowly catch your breath after your morning run. You feel like you're in pretty good shape, but do you really know how healthy your body is? Researchers with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology developed a way to capture this information and use it to evaluate cardiorespiratory health. By taking into account factors such as maximum heart rate, resting pulse rate and weekly amount of exercise, as well as age, gender, height and weight, you can develop a picture of your personal "fitness age." According to the researchers, the lower your fitness age from your actual age, the longer your life expectancy. The online fitness tool to calculate this number is easy to use and takes a few minutes. If you don't like the numbers you see on the screen once the test is complete, you can make changes to your daily habits and manage factors that you can control. Exercising more frequently or consuming fewer calories are a couple of simple steps that may add years to your life. To calculate your fitness age, visit worldfitnesslevel.org. THE 12TH ANNUAL HOSPITAL GALA HONORS OUR CHERISHED VOLUNTEERS. On Nov. 19, Columbus Regional Healthcare System will roll out the red carpet at Vineland Station to honor the spirit of volunteerism that helps our hospital thrive. Hosted by the CRHS Foundation, the 12th Annual Hospital Gala will be held from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., and everyone is invited. "The goal of this year's event is to honor the volunteers who help every day," says Brenda Jolly, gala chair and vice chair of the CRHS Foundation Board of Directors. "Whether they are working in the gift shop, manning reception, or helping patients and families navigate the hallways, they are always ready to serve wherever and however they can." A team of roughly 25 volunteers will be guests of honor at the event, which is also a fundraiser for the CRHS Foundation. Money collected during this year's event will help support projects such as the new pastoral care program at CRHS. "This event has become an annual kickoff for the holiday season and a wonderful way to support projects that are critical to the hospital," says Terrie Priest, Foundation director and vice president of Business Development and Community Relations at CRHS. "We are so excited to honor our volunteers." The 12th Annual Gala will feature live music by local band The Embers. Tickets are $100 each.
