Stay safe
while
tidying
your yard.
A leaf blower makes yard work easier, especially if you
have children who love to jump in the piles and force a
do-over. But the tool can pose health risks.
Old two-stroke, gas-powered leaf blowers can pollute
the air even more than cars, according to the American
Lung Association (ALA). Common at home improvement
stores, two-stroke, gas-powered leaf blowers contaminate
your air with dangerous particulates and carbon
monoxide, and disperse allergens like fungi and pollen,
according to Kenneth Spaeth, MD, internal medicine and
occupational medicine physician with Northwell Health.
Instead, the ALA recommends hand-powered or
electric leaf blowers, which work much more quietly
than gas-powered units with levels of 90 to 102 decibels.
With the right tools, cleaning up fallen leaves can be
a healthy activity that families can do together on a crisp
autumn day.
"Keep clean and safe with sturdy work gloves and
safety glasses," said Dr. Spaeth. "And don't forget the
sunscreen before heading outside."
