Your Voice "My family and I have visited many CHI Mercy Health departments over the years. From the Emergency Room and Laboratory to the Respiratory and Physical Therapy Departments, the staff is very caring and friendly. Joining the Patient and Family Advisory Council allows me to give back to the hospital." KRISTEN LINDGREN, PFAC MEMBER "Our hospital is a vital part of our community. CHI Mercy Health is invested in and committed to providing the best quality of care by enhancing the needs we feel are the most important." KALYN BOTZ, PATIENT AND FAMILY ADVISORY COUNCIL MEMBER Our patients and their families bring new points of view to CHI Mercy Health—and we're committed to embracing their perspectives. To give Barnes County residents an opportunity to share their suggestions, we created the Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC). During each quarterly meeting, the council comes together to share dinner and discuss what's going well at CHI Mercy Health, as well as potential areas for improvement. In recent meetings, for example, PFAC members toured hospital departments and oered input on aesthetic improvements. Thanks to PFAC feedback, we have placed new signs throughout the hospital. The council also helped develop four standards of excellence that CHI Mercy Health sta members will work to uphold. With PFAC input, these standards were used to inform the questions on our patient satisfaction surveys. "The council brainstormed what the perfect patient experience looks like," says Alana Wendel, RN, CEN, Emergency Room Manager, Ambulatory Care Manager, CHIMercy Health. "The standards include behaviors such aspromptly answering call lights, smiling and greeting people within a 5- to 10-foot radius, and providing medication education." The council also recently identied a need for water in the lobby—a simple, easily fullled step that raises visitor comfort level. "The PFAC council members look at the hospital with fresh eyes and give great feedback," says Stephanie Mayeld, Foundation/Mission Director at CHI Mercy Health. "We would love to have more community members join us." The next PFAC meeting is scheduled for October 25. If you are interested in participating, call Alana at 701-840-1009. MATTERS Sign Up to Save a Life Joining the CHI Mercy Health Patient and Family Advisory Council is just one way you can give back to our community. CHI Mercy Health is also participating in the National Hospital Organ Donation Campaign to raise awareness about the need for organ donation. More than 120,000 people in the United States are awaiting an organ transplant. To help ease the shortage, we hope to add 100 new eye, tissue, and organ donors to the North Dakota Donor Registry. Visit www.mercyhospitalvalleycity.org/ps-organ-tissue- donation.htm for more information about how you can help.
