Patients suffering from aortic stenosis who are not appropriate candidates for an open valve replacement procedure have new hope for treatment due to the recent U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval of the SAPIEN transcatheter heart valve. University Health System is leading the way in South Texas, as it is the only provider in the area to offer the new transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) procedure. In addition to providing the hybrid operating room required to perform this procedure, University Health System has assembled the multidisciplinary team necessary, thanks to its long-standing relationship with the academic medical practice UT Medicine San Antonio.
